Advanced Micro Devices designs processors and graphics chips. Jerry Sanders and a group of colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor founded it in 1969. It is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, and relies on outside foundries such as TSMC to build its chips.
The Ryzen line covers desktop and laptop processors, and EPYC chips are made for servers. Radeon graphics cards compete with those from Nvidia. AMD also supplies the processors used in the PlayStation and Xbox game consoles.
In 2022 the company completed the purchase of Xilinx, which makes programmable chips. The Instinct line of accelerators is aimed at AI and high-performance computing. Lisa Su has been chief executive since 2014 and led the company back to competition with Intel in the server market. The company is fabless and works closely with TSMC. Its chips are used in supercomputers, including some of the fastest systems in the world. AMD bought ATI in 2006 to enter the graphics market, and the Radeon brand came from that purchase.
