Calm

Calm is a wellness company based in San Francisco. Michael Acton Smith and Alex Tew launched it in 2012, first as a website with calming nature scenes and sounds, and then as an app. The company has offices in San Francisco and New York. It offers programs for adults and children, and its app is sold on iOS and Android as well as the web.

The app offers guided meditations, sleep stories, music, breathing programs and masterclasses. Many of its sleep stories are read by actors and public figures. Subscribers pay monthly or yearly.

Calm also sells a version for businesses and has launched a health product for employers. It became a unicorn startup in 2019. Apple named it App of the Year in 2017. Its Sleep Stories include narration by Matthew McConaughey and Harry Styles. The company is also active in music and children's content. Competitors include Headspace and Insight Timer.
