Coursera is an online learning platform. Stanford computer science professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller founded it in 2012. The first courses were free classes taught by university staff. The company is based in Mountain View, California.
Learners take courses from universities and companies such as Google, IBM and Meta. Many courses are free to audit, and a fee gives access to graded work and certificates. Specializations bundle several courses on one topic, and Professional Certificates aim at job skills in fields like data analysis and project management.
Coursera also offers full online degrees with partner universities, including bachelor's and master's programs. Coursera for Business sells access to employers, and Coursera for Government and Campus serve other groups. The company went public in 2021. Greg Hart became chief executive in 2023, after Jeff Maggioncalda. The company has offices in the United States, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, India and other places. Learners can take courses in many languages and earn certificates they can share with employers.
