Heineken N.V. is a Dutch brewing company headquartered in Amsterdam. Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought the De Hooiberg brewery in Amsterdam in 1864 and the company grew from there. The brand has been a sponsor of events such as Formula 1 and the Rugby World Cup. The company employs tens of thousands of people and sells beer, cider and soft drinks alongside its lagers.
Its main product is Heineken lager, a pale beer sold in a green bottle. The group also brews and distributes Amstel, Tiger, Desperados, Sol, Birra Moretti and many local brands. It sells alcohol-free beer under the Heineken 0.0 name.
Heineken operates breweries in dozens of countries and sells in more than 190. It is one of the largest brewers by volume. The Heineken family keeps a controlling stake, and shares trade on Euronext Amsterdam. It has sponsored the UEFA Champions League for years. The company bought the Mexican brewer FEMSA's beer business and became a major presence in Latin America. Competitors include AB InBev and Carlsberg.
