Hertz is an American car rental company headquartered in Estero, Florida. Walter Jacobs started a car rental business in Chicago in 1918 with a dozen Model T cars. John Hertz bought it in 1923.
The company rents cars, SUVs and vans from airport and neighborhood locations. It also owns the Dollar and Thrifty brands, and it sells used cars from its fleet. Hertz runs a loyalty program called Gold Plus Rewards.
Hertz filed for bankruptcy protection in 2020 and emerged in 2021. It then bought a large number of Tesla electric vehicles for its fleet, and later sold part of that fleet. The company operates in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The company is listed on Nasdaq and faces competition from Enterprise and Avis Budget Group. It also runs a vehicle sales operation. Customers can reserve through its app and website.
