The LEGO Group is a Danish toy company with headquarters in Billund. Ole Kirk Christiansen began making wooden toys in 1932, and the name LEGO comes from the Danish words leg godt, which mean play well. Plastic bricks arrived in the late 1940s and the modern interlocking design was patented in 1958.
The company makes building sets in themes such as City, Technic, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Icons. It also publishes video games and produced films and television series. Adult collectors form a growing part of its buyers.
LEGO operates its own factories in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, China, the Czech Republic and Vietnam. It sells through its own stores, its website and retail partners. The Kirk Kristiansen family still owns the company. Its Minifigure characters first appeared in 1978. The LEGO Movie and its sequels, along with theme parks called Legoland, extend the brand. The Lego Ideas program lets fans submit designs that may become official sets.
