Marriott International is an American hospitality company headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. J. Willard Marriott opened a root beer stand in Washington, D.C., in 1927, and the first Marriott hotel opened in Arlington, Virginia, in 1957. The company reports results in dollars. Anthony Capuano has been chief executive since 2021, following the death of Arne Sorenson. Its franchise and management fees make up the bulk of its income.

Marriott manages and franchises hotels under brands such as JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels, Courtyard, Residence Inn and Moxy. It acquired Starwood Hotels in 2016. The company owns few of its properties and earns fees from owners and franchisees.

The group has more than 30 brands and thousands of properties in over 130 countries. Its loyalty program is Marriott Bonvoy. The firm is listed on Nasdaq. It has sold few hotels itself because of its asset-light model. In 2018 it disclosed a large data breach involving guest records at the former Starwood reservation system. Hilton and Hyatt are among its competitors.
