Nvidia designs graphics processing units and related software. Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem founded it in 1993. The company is based in Santa Clara, California, and it does not run its own chip factories. Outside firms such as TSMC make its processors.
The GeForce line of graphics cards made its name among PC gamers. Later, researchers found that the same chips suit the heavy math behind machine learning. Nvidia's CUDA software platform lets developers program its chips for this work, and most AI labs now train models on its hardware.
The company sells data center systems, networking gear and chips for cars and robots. It also offers software for simulation and for running AI models. Its products are used in cloud services, research labs, game consoles and professional graphics work. Huang is still the chief executive. In recent years Nvidia became one of the most valuable companies in the world as demand for AI computing rose. Its Hopper and Blackwell chips are used in many of the largest data centers, and it competes with AMD and with custom chips from cloud providers.
