Tesla makes electric cars and energy storage products. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded the company in 2003. Elon Musk joined early as an investor and later became chief executive. Headquarters moved from Palo Alto to Austin, Texas.
The current car range includes the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and the Cybertruck. Tesla sells directly to buyers online and in its own showrooms instead of through franchised dealers. It also runs the Supercharger network of fast charging stations.
The energy side of the business sells the Powerwall home battery and the Megapack for utilities, along with solar panels. Cars include a driver assistance system sold under the names Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. Factories operate in the United States, China and Germany. Elon Musk is chief executive, and the company has drawn attention for his public statements as much as for its products. Tesla has announced plans for robotaxis and a humanoid robot called Optimus. In sales it competes with makers in China and Europe as well as long-established carmakers.
