Unilever is a British consumer goods company headquartered in London. It was created in 1929 by the merger of the Dutch margarine maker Margarine Unie and the British soap maker Lever Brothers.
The group sells beauty and personal care items, home care products, nutrition products and ice cream. Brands include Dove, Vaseline, Axe, Lipton, Hellmann's, Knorr, Persil and Omo. In 2025 it separated its ice cream arm into a distinct listed company.
Unilever sells in most countries and employs a large workforce across factories, offices and research sites. It publishes targets on plastic use, emissions and fair pay in its supply chain. Its shares trade in London, Amsterdam and New York. Paul Polman and later chief executives have reshaped the portfolio around fewer, larger brands. The company sells more than a billion products a day, by its own account. Procter & Gamble and Nestle are among its main competitors.
