Unity Technologies makes the Unity game engine. David Helgason, Nicholas Francis and Joachim Ante founded it in Copenhagen in 2004. The company is now headquartered in San Francisco.
Unity lets developers build games and interactive apps once and publish them to many platforms, including phones, consoles, PCs and virtual reality headsets. A large share of mobile games are made with it. Programmers write scripts in C#, and an Asset Store sells ready-made art, tools and code.
Beyond games, the engine is used in film, car design, architecture and simulation. The company also runs an advertising and monetization business for mobile apps, which grew through the merger with ironSource in 2022. A change to its pricing model in 2023 upset many developers, and the company reversed it after the backlash. Unity went public in 2020. John Riccitiello led Unity as chief executive until 2023, followed by Matt Bromberg. The engine competes with Unreal Engine and Godot, and it has a large community of independent creators. Many games from small studios are built on it.
