AXA

AXA is a French insurance company headquartered in Paris. Its roots go back to a group of mutual insurers from the 1850s in Normandy, and it took the AXA name in 1985 under Claude Bebear. The company reports results in euros and employs tens of thousands of people across its offices and agencies. Its headquarters stands in the eighth district of Paris, near the Champs-Elysees.

The company sells property and casualty insurance, health cover and life insurance. AXA XL covers large corporate and specialty risks. It sold much of its asset management arm and its life business in some markets to focus on insurance.

AXA serves customers in dozens of countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. It is among the largest insurers in Europe. The shares are listed on Euronext Paris. Thomas Buberl has been chief executive since 2016. The group bought XL Group in 2018 to build its commercial lines. Competitors include Allianz, Zurich and Generali.
