Bose is an American audio equipment company. Amar Bose, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, founded it in 1964. The company is based in Framingham, Massachusetts, and it remains privately owned. Amar Bose gave most of the company's non-voting shares to MIT.
Its first well known product was the 901 loudspeaker, released in 1968. The company later became known for noise-cancelling headphones, which began as a design for aircraft pilots. The QuietComfort line is the best known of these. Bose also makes wireless earbuds, Bluetooth speakers, soundbars and home theater systems.
The company sells through its own stores, its website and retailers. It has also supplied sound systems for cars from several makers and for venues such as sports arenas. Bose closed many of its retail stores in 2017. In 2024 it introduced the QuietComfort Ultra headphones and earbuds. Its products are widely used by travelers, and Bose frequently appears in reviews of audio gear. The founder remained involved with the company until his death in 2013. Bose also sells audio products designed for businesses, such as speakers for shops and restaurants.
