Cohere is a Canadian AI company that builds language models for businesses. Aidan Gomez, Ivan Zhang and Nick Frosst founded it in 2019 in Toronto. Gomez is a co-author of the 2017 paper that introduced the transformer architecture.
Unlike some rivals, Cohere sells mainly to companies and not to consumers. Its Command models handle text generation and chat. Embed and Rerank models support search and retrieval over a company's own documents. Customers can run the models through Cohere's API, on major cloud platforms or in their own private environments.
The company stresses data privacy and deployments for regulated fields such as banking and government. North is its workplace assistant for employees. Cohere For AI, later called Cohere Labs, runs open research projects. It has offices in Toronto, San Francisco and London. The company has raised funding from Nvidia, Oracle and Salesforce Ventures, among others. It has worked with the Canadian government and with companies such as Royal Bank of Canada. Cohere often highlights multilingual support in its models.
