Epic Games is a video game and software company based in Cary, North Carolina. Tim Sweeney founded it in 1991 in Maryland under the name Potomac Computer Systems. It later became Epic MegaGames and then Epic Games.
The company made the Unreal series of shooter games in the late 1990s, and the Unreal Engine that powered them became widely licensed. Developers across games, film and television now use the engine for real-time graphics. Epic also made the Gears of War series.
Fortnite, released in 2017, is a free-to-play game that grew into a large social space with concerts and events. Epic runs the Epic Games Store for PC games and the Epic Online Services toolkit. It has fought Apple and Google in court over app store fees. Tencent holds a significant minority stake. Epic won a ruling against Apple in 2021 on anti-steering rules, and a separate case against Google in 2023. Fortnite later returned to the iPhone in the United States. The company also makes Rocket League and owned the music site Bandcamp until 2023.
