Expedia Group is a travel technology company based in Seattle. Microsoft launched Expedia as a travel site in 1996, and it became independent in 1999. IAC later took control and spun it off in 2005.
The Expedia site lets people book flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and vacation packages. Its group of brands includes Hotels.com, Vrbo for vacation rentals, Orbitz, Travelocity and Hotwire. A rewards program lets travelers earn points across these brands.
Expedia also sells services to other businesses. Expedia Partner Solutions powers booking on third-party sites, and Egencia handled corporate travel. Like other online travel agencies, it earns commissions from hotels and airlines. Ariane Gorin became chief executive in 2024. The company moved its headquarters from Bellevue to Seattle in 2019. Expedia says it serves travelers and partners worldwide. It uses AI tools to help travelers plan trips, and it provides data to airlines and hotels. Barry Diller of IAC chaired the board for many years before stepping back.
