Tripadvisor runs a travel website known for user reviews. Stephen Kaufer, Langley Steinert and others founded it in 2000 in Massachusetts. It started as a search tool for travel articles and then turned to reviews written by travelers.
The site holds reviews and photos of hotels, restaurants, attractions and tours. Travelers use ratings and rankings to choose where to stay and eat. Listing owners can respond to reviews, and fake review detection is a continuing problem that the company says it fights.
Tripadvisor earns money from ads and from referral links to booking sites, and from commissions on tours and restaurant reservations sold through Viator and TheFork. Expedia owned it for a time before it was spun off in 2011. Tripadvisor is headquartered in Needham, Massachusetts. Matt Goldberg became chief executive in 2023. Tripadvisor has also rolled out a paid subscription called Tripadvisor Plus. The site is available in many languages and countries, and it is a regular source of tourism data.
