Indian e-commerce marketplace owned by Walmart

Bengaluru, IN Founded 2007 500+ employees

About

Flipkart is an Indian online retailer headquartered in Bengaluru. Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, two former Amazon employees, founded it in 2007 and began by selling books. The company has remained private since the Walmart deal. It employs a large number of people in warehouses and delivery roles, and it has said it plans to list its shares in the future.

The marketplace now sells mobile phones, electronics, clothing, home goods and groceries. It also owns Myntra for fashion and runs PhonePe, a payments app that later split off as a distinct company. The Big Billion Days sale is its biggest yearly event.

Walmart bought a majority stake in 2018 for around 16 billion dollars. Flipkart operates its own logistics arm, called Ekart. It competes mainly with Amazon India. Competitors include Amazon India and Reliance's JioMart. Flipkart also started a grocery service and a cash-on-delivery option. It has invested in supply chains, with warehouses and delivery hubs across Indian cities.
