General Motors is an American automotive company based in Detroit, Michigan. William Durant founded it in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, as a holding company that gathered Buick and other brands.
Its brands are Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. Models include the Silverado pickup, the Equinox and Tahoe SUVs and the electric Bolt and Lyriq. GM sells vehicles in many countries, with China and North America as its largest markets.
The company filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and emerged after a government-backed restructuring. It ended funding for its Cruise robotaxi unit in 2024 and is putting more effort into electric vehicles and driver-assist software. GM Financial handles loans and leases. The firm also owns the OnStar service and a stake in the battery maker Ultium Cells. Mary Barra has led it since 2014. Ford, Toyota and Stellantis are among its major rivals.
