Google DeepMind is the artificial intelligence research group of Alphabet. Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman founded DeepMind in London in 2010. Google bought it in 2014. In 2023 it merged with the Google Brain team and took its current name.
The lab became widely known in 2016 when its AlphaGo program beat the Go champion Lee Sedol. AlphaFold followed and predicted the three-dimensional shapes of proteins with high accuracy. A database of its predictions, built with the European Bioinformatics Institute, is open to researchers. Hassabis and John Jumper shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work.
DeepMind also builds the Gemini family of models, which power many Google products. Other projects cover weather forecasting, fusion reactor control and mathematics. The main base is in London, with teams in other cities. Hassabis leads the group as chief executive. The lab also works on AI safety and responsibility. Isomorphic Labs, a drug discovery company, grew out of the AlphaFold work and is a separate Alphabet business. The research is often published in scientific journals.
