Grab is a technology company based in Singapore that runs a so-called super app across Southeast Asia. Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling started it in Malaysia in 2012 as MyTeksi, a taxi booking app. It was renamed GrabTaxi and then Grab.
The app began with ride hailing and expanded into food delivery, groceries, parcel delivery and digital payments. GrabPay and GrabFin offer wallets and loans. Grab operates in several countries, including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.
In 2018 it took over Uber's Southeast Asian business in return for a stake in Grab. The company listed on Nasdaq in 2021 through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company. Grab has explored a combination with GoTo, the Indonesian group behind Gojek, and talks have continued on and off for years. Anthony Tan is group chief executive. Grab has set up a digital bank in Singapore with Singtel and has experimented with autonomous vehicles. It also supplies loans and insurance in several countries.
