IBM is a technology company based in Armonk, New York. It traces its history to 1911 and took the name International Business Machines in 1924. For decades it built mainframe computers and the first widely used personal computer line.
Today most of its work is software and consulting. It sells hybrid cloud tools, built on Red Hat, which it bought in 2019. The watsonx platform covers AI models and data tools for businesses. IBM Consulting helps clients plan and run large technology projects.
IBM still makes mainframes, such as the IBM Z line, which banks and insurers use for high-volume transactions. Its research labs have produced several Nobel Prize winners and work on quantum computers that customers can reach through the cloud. Arvind Krishna has been chief executive since 2020. The company has changed shape many times since its early days. It spun off its managed infrastructure services business as Kyndryl in 2021. IBM also employs a large number of researchers and has received more US patents than most firms for many years in a row.
