Intel designs and manufactures semiconductors. Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore founded it in 1968, and it is based in Santa Clara, California. In 1971 it released the 4004, one of the first commercial microprocessors.
Its x86 processors power most personal computers and many servers. The Core line serves laptops and desktops, and Xeon chips serve data centers. Intel also makes graphics cards under the Arc name and sells chips for networking and embedded devices.
Unlike many rivals, Intel runs its own factories. It has also started a foundry business that makes chips for other companies. New plants have been built or planned in the United States, Ireland, Germany and Israel. The company bought Mobileye, which supplies driver assistance technology to carmakers. Intel long led the market for PC processors but lost ground in manufacturing to TSMC and in AI chips to Nvidia. It went through leadership changes and large layoffs in recent years. The United States government took an equity stake in the company in 2025.
