Mailchimp is a marketing platform best known for email newsletters. Ben Chestnut, Dan Kurzius and Mark Armstrong started it in Atlanta in 2001 as a side project of their web design firm. It grew as a bootstrapped company without outside investors for many years.
Users build campaigns with drag-and-drop templates, manage subscriber lists and track opens and clicks. Mailchimp added automation, landing pages, social ads, postcards and simple websites over time. A free tier long helped it spread among small businesses and bloggers.
Intuit bought Mailchimp in 2021 for about 12 billion dollars. The company is still based in Atlanta and now sits inside Intuit's ecosystem alongside QuickBooks. Its chimp mascot, Freddie, is a recognizable part of the brand. Developers also use its Mandrill service for transactional email. The brand is known for its approachable tone and for early use of free plans. Mailchimp sells to online sellers, bloggers, nonprofits and small companies. Its parent Intuit has since folded some of its tools into a wider small business offering.
