Meta Platforms is the company behind Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Mark Zuckerberg and fellow students started Facebook in 2004 from a dorm at Harvard. The company changed its name from Facebook, Inc. to Meta in 2021.
Most of Meta's income comes from advertising shown across its apps. Advertisers can target audiences using the data these services collect. Billions of people use at least one Meta app each month.
The company also builds virtual and augmented reality products. Its Reality Labs division makes the Quest headsets and smart glasses developed with Ray-Ban. Meta's AI research group released the Llama family of language models, which developers can download and run on their own systems. Meta bought Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014. Regulators and courts have examined its privacy practices, its competitive conduct and the effects of its apps on young people. Zuckerberg remains chief executive and controls most of the voting shares.
