Reddit is a social site made up of thousands of communities called subreddits. Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian founded it in 2005, soon after graduating from the University of Virginia. Condé Nast bought it the next year, and it later became an independent company again.
Users post links, text, images and video, and other users vote the posts up or down. Votes decide what appears at the top of each community. Volunteer moderators set the rules for each subreddit, and most users post under pseudonyms.
Subjects range from news and sports to hobbies and support groups. Reddit also hosts question-and-answer sessions with public figures. In 2023 it changed its API pricing, which led to a widespread protest by moderators. It went public in 2024 and licenses its content to AI developers. The headquarters is in San Francisco. Steve Huffman returned as chief executive in 2015. Reddit also sells Reddit Premium and awards that users give to each other. The site is among the most visited in the world and often shows up in search results for questions people ask.
