Mistral AI

Mistral AI is a French artificial intelligence company based in Paris. Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothee Lacroix started it in April 2023. Mensch had worked at Google DeepMind, and the other two came from Meta.

The company released its first model, Mistral 7B, in September 2023 under an open license, and the small size and strong results drew attention. Later releases include Mixtral, which uses a mixture of experts design, and larger models offered by API under commercial terms. Codestral is aimed at programming tasks.

Le Chat is its consumer chat assistant. Mistral sells its models to companies, which can run them in the cloud or on their own hardware. Microsoft and ASML are among its investors. The firm is often named as Europe's main contender in a field dominated by American labs. The company has been valued in the billions of euros after several funding rounds. Mistral has opened offices in the United States and elsewhere, and it has signed deals with French government bodies and large firms. It publishes some models under the Apache 2.0 license.
