Orsted

Danish developer of offshore wind farms

Fredericia, DK Founded 1972 500+ employees

About

Orsted is a Danish renewable energy company headquartered in Fredericia. It began in 1972 as Dansk Naturgas, a state-owned oil and gas firm, and was later called DONG Energy. The company adopted the Orsted name in 2017, after the scientist Hans Christian Orsted. The company is among the largest offshore wind developers in the world. It reports results in Danish kroner, runs major projects in the North Sea and the Baltic, and trades on the Copenhagen exchange.

Orsted builds, owns and operates offshore wind farms, mainly in Europe, the United States and Asia. It also runs onshore wind, solar and energy storage projects and sells power and bioenergy. The company sold its oil and gas business in 2017.

Projects in the United States have faced delays and cost problems, which led to write-downs and a share sale in 2025. The Danish state is its largest shareholder. Orsted is listed on Nasdaq Copenhagen. Its early wind farm projects were in Denmark, such as Horns Rev. Competitors in offshore wind include Equinor, RWE and Iberdrola.
