Perplexity is an AI search product. Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho and Andy Konwinski founded the company in 2022 in San Francisco. Srinivas had worked at OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
A user asks a question in plain language, and Perplexity searches the web and writes a short answer with numbered links to its sources. Follow-up questions keep the context of the thread. The service uses its own models together with models from other labs, which paying users can select.
Perplexity Pro adds more advanced searches and file uploads, and the company has released a browser called Comet. Publishers have raised concerns about how the product uses their articles, and some have taken legal action. Perplexity has responded with revenue-sharing programs for news sites. The company is privately held and has been valued in the billions of dollars after several rounds of funding. It offers an API for developers and has added finance and shopping features. Perplexity competes with Google, ChatGPT search and other AI assistants.
