Rivian is an American electric vehicle company headquartered in Irvine, California. R.J. Scaringe founded it in 2009 and it was first known as Mainstream Motors. The firm went public on Nasdaq in 2021.
Rivian sells the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, and an electric delivery van for Amazon. It builds the vehicles at a plant in Normal, Illinois, and is building a second site in Georgia. It also operates its own charging network and service centers.
Amazon is a major customer and shareholder. In 2024 Volkswagen Group agreed to invest in a joint venture with Rivian focused on software and electrical architecture. The company's R2 midsize SUV is its next planned model. It has also developed its own driver assistance and software. Rivian trades under the ticker RIVN. Competitors include Tesla, Ford and General Motors in the electric truck and SUV segments.
