Roblox is an online platform for playing and creating games. David Baszucki and Erik Cassel founded the company in 2004, and the platform opened to the public in 2006. It is based in San Mateo, California, and went public in 2021.
It is not a single game. Players pick from millions of experiences made by other users, and they play on phones, computers, consoles and VR headsets. Creators build with Roblox Studio and write scripts in Luau, a language based on Lua. They earn money through Robux, the platform's virtual currency, which can be exchanged for real money.
A large part of the audience is children and teenagers. Roblox has been criticized and sued over child safety, and it has added age estimation and chat limits in response. Avatars can be customized with items sold in a catalog. Baszucki is chief executive. The company reports daily active users in the tens of millions and pays developers through its Developer Exchange program. Roblox has hosted brand events with companies such as Gucci, Nike and Walmart.
