Stability AI is a generative AI company headquartered in London. Emad Mostaque founded it in 2019. It is best known for Stable Diffusion, an image model released in August 2022 with open weights that anyone could download and run.
The release started a wave of community tools, fine-tuned models and apps. Stability later published newer image models, as well as models for video, audio and 3D. Developers use its API, and some models can be licensed for commercial use.
The company went through a difficult period in 2023 and 2024, including lawsuits over training data, financial strain and the departure of Mostaque as chief executive. New leadership and funding followed, and the board now includes the film director James Cameron. Getty Images sued the company in the United States and the United Kingdom over the use of its photos. Stable Diffusion was developed with researchers at LMU Munich and Runway, and training used computing power from Stability. The company also released Stable Audio and Stable Video. Prem Akkaraju was named chief executive in 2024.
