Uber runs a platform that connects riders with drivers through a phone app. Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick started it in 2009 under the name UberCab in San Francisco. The company is now headquartered there and operates in many countries.
The ride service is the original product. Drivers use their own cars, and riders see the price and the driver's details before pickup. Uber Eats, launched in 2014, delivers meals from restaurants and also groceries from stores.
Uber Freight matches shippers with truck drivers. The company also offers bikes and scooters in some cities and has partnered with makers of driverless vehicles. Drivers are classed as independent contractors, and this has led to legal fights and new rules in several countries. Dara Khosrowshahi has been chief executive since 2017. Uber sold its self-driving unit and its operations in China, Russia and Southeast Asia to rivals over the years. It reported its first full-year profit in 2023 after many years of losses.
