Workday sells cloud applications for finance and human resources. Dave Duffield and Aneel Bhusri founded it in 2005. Duffield had earlier started PeopleSoft, which Oracle bought in 2005. The company is based in Pleasanton, California.
Its core products are Workday Human Capital Management and Workday Financial Management. They handle payroll, hiring, benefits, budgeting and accounting in a single system. Many large employers, universities and hospitals use it as their main record of staff and money.
Workday also offers planning, spend management and analytics tools. Its Illuminate AI agents handle tasks such as drafting job descriptions. In 2024 it bought HiredScore, an AI recruiting company. Workday went public in 2012. A lawsuit in the United States has questioned whether its screening tools can discriminate in hiring. The company runs the Workday Rising conference and operates data centers in several regions. It competes with Oracle, SAP and ADP. Customers include many large universities, hospitals and retailers, and the software is offered in dozens of languages.
