Zoom provides video meetings and related communication tools. Eric Yuan, a former Cisco Webex engineer, founded it in 2011 in San Jose, California. The service started as Zoom Video Communications.
Use grew sharply in early 2020 when schools and offices moved online during the pandemic. The free plan limits meeting length, and paid plans remove that limit and raise participant caps. Zoom also sells Zoom Phone, Zoom Webinars and Zoom Rooms for conference spaces.
The company has added team chat, a whiteboard, email and calendar tools, and an AI assistant that summarizes meetings. It faced scrutiny early on over privacy and security practices and made changes in response. Zoom went public in 2019. Employees work across many offices and remotely. The brand also covers Zoom Workplace, a bundle of communication tools, and Zoom Contact Center. Zoom competes with Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Webex. Yuan remains chief executive, and the company reports results in US dollars.
