Coinbase is a cryptocurrency exchange. Brian Armstrong, a former Airbnb engineer, and Fred Ehrsam founded it in 2012 in San Francisco. It has since operated as a remote-first company with no headquarters office. It went public through a direct listing in April 2021.
Customers buy, sell and hold assets such as bitcoin and ether through the website and app. Coinbase Advanced serves more active traders, and Coinbase Wallet lets users control their own keys. The company also offers staking, a card, custody for institutions and a prime brokerage for funds.
Coinbase created Base, a layer-two blockchain built on Ethereum, and it backs the USDC stablecoin together with Circle. In the United States the Securities and Exchange Commission sued it in 2023 over its listings, and the case was dropped in 2025. Coinbase joined the S&P 500 index in May 2025. Coinbase is listed on Nasdaq under the symbol COIN. The company has offices in several regions but staff work mostly remotely. It supports a large catalog of digital assets and has launched products in Europe, Singapore and elsewhere.
