JPMorgan Chase is a financial holding company headquartered in New York City. It took its present form in 2000, when J.P. Morgan and Chase Manhattan merged. Its roots reach back to banks founded in the 1800s, and the Morgan name comes from the financier J. P. Morgan.
The bank has several large divisions. Chase serves consumers with checking accounts, credit cards, mortgages and branches across the United States. The Commercial and Investment Bank advises companies on mergers and raises money through stocks and bonds. Asset and Wealth Management manages money for institutions and wealthy clients.
JPMorgan bought Bear Stearns in 2008 and Washington Mutual's banking operations the same year, and it took over First Republic Bank in 2023. Jamie Dimon has been chief executive since 2005. The firm is one of the banks regulators treat as globally systemically important. Chase serves tens of millions of households in the United States. The bank runs a large technology organization and has invested in blockchain systems for payments. Its headquarters tower at 270 Park Avenue was completed in 2025.
