Goldman Sachs is an investment bank and financial services firm in New York City. Marcus Goldman started it in 1869, and his son-in-law Samuel Sachs joined later. It went public in 1999 after operating as a partnership for most of its history.
The firm advises on mergers and acquisitions and underwrites stock and bond offerings. It also runs trading operations for institutions and manages money for investors. The Asset and Wealth Management division includes private wealth clients and funds. Many former partners have gone on to senior roles in government, which has given the firm a reputation for wide influence.
Goldman tried consumer banking with the Marcus brand and the Apple Card, then scaled back and moved to sell or exit most of those businesses. The firm paid large penalties over its role in the 1MDB scandal. David Solomon has been chief executive since 2018. Its headquarters is at 200 West Street. The firm is a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. It employs tens of thousands of people in offices around the world, and its research reports are widely followed. Goldman also runs the 10,000 Women program for female entrepreneurs.
