MongoDB develops a document-oriented database. Dwight Merriman, Eliot Horowitz and Kevin Ryan founded it in 2007 as 10gen. They had worked together at DoubleClick and wanted a database that fit modern web applications. The company took the MongoDB name in 2013.
Instead of tables and rows, the database stores records as flexible JSON-like documents. This suits data that changes shape over time. Developers use drivers for languages such as Python, JavaScript and Java to work with it.
MongoDB Atlas is the managed cloud service and the main source of income. The community edition remains available under a source-available license. Newer features include vector search for AI applications and time series collections. The company went public in 2017 and is headquartered in New York. The database is popular for web and mobile applications and for projects whose data model changes quickly. It competes with PostgreSQL, Oracle and Amazon DynamoDB. MongoDB holds a yearly user conference and runs a free training site, MongoDB University, for developers.
