SAP is a German software company based in Walldorf. Five former IBM engineers founded it in 1972 to build standard business software. The name stands for Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing.
Its best known product is an enterprise resource planning system, now sold as S/4HANA. Large manufacturers, retailers and public bodies use it to run accounting, purchasing, production and personnel records. HANA is an in-memory database that SAP developed to speed up this work.
The company also sells cloud tools for procurement, travel expenses and human resources through brands such as Ariba, Concur and SuccessFactors. Its Business Technology Platform lets customers build extensions and connect systems. SAP counts a large share of the world's biggest companies among its customers. Christian Klein is chief executive. The company reports results in euros and trades on the Frankfurt exchange and in New York. Its software runs in many industries, and it has pushed customers to move from older on-premise systems to cloud-based versions.
