Scale AI provides training data and evaluation services for artificial intelligence. Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo founded it in 2016 in San Francisco, and Wang became the sole chief executive. Wang left school at MIT to start the company.
The first product labeled images for self-driving car developers. Scale later widened its work to text, audio and video, and to the human feedback used to fine-tune language models. A large pool of contractors does much of the labeling, supported by software that checks quality.
Customers have included OpenAI, Meta and the US government, for which Scale has done defense and intelligence projects. In June 2025 Meta took a 49 percent stake in the company, and Wang joined Meta to lead a new AI group. Scale has faced questions over working conditions for its contract labelers. Jason Droege became chief executive after Wang left. Scale also built a product called Donovan for defense users and sells evaluation tools for model builders. Its labeling business competes with Surge AI, Labelbox and others.
