Canva is an online design platform. Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht and Cameron Adams founded it in Perth, Australia, in 2013. Perkins had earlier taught design programs and saw that most tools were hard for beginners.
Users pick from a large library of templates and edit them in the browser or phone app. Designs include social media posts, presentations, posters, resumes and short videos. Stock photos, fonts and graphics are part of the library, and some are free.
Canva Pro adds more templates and tools such as background removal and brand kits. Canva for Teams supports shared work, and the company also gives free access to schools and nonprofits. It bought Affinity, a set of professional design apps, in 2024. Magic Studio is its set of AI features. The main office is in Sydney. Canva says a very large number of people use it each month, and it is available in over a hundred languages. The company is privately held and has been valued at tens of billions of dollars in private funding. Offices are located in Australia, the Philippines, Austria and other places.
