DoorDash is a delivery platform for restaurants and stores. Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang and Evan Moore founded it in 2013 as Palo Alto Delivery, which began with a simple website listing restaurant menus. The company is now based in San Francisco.
Customers order through an app, and independent couriers called Dashers pick up and deliver the order. Restaurants pay commissions, and customers pay delivery and service fees. DashPass is a subscription that reduces these fees. The service has grown from meals to groceries, convenience items and alcohol.
DoorDash bought Caviar in 2019 and Wolt, a Finnish delivery company, in 2022. It went public in 2020. In the United States it holds the largest share of the food delivery market. Disputes over courier pay and fees charged to restaurants have led to lawsuits and local price caps. DoorDash also offers DoorDash Drive for stores that run their own delivery, and it supports restaurants with marketing tools. It has run autonomous delivery tests with partners. Tony Xu remains chief executive.
