Pinterest is a visual search and bookmarking service. Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp founded it in 2010, and it is headquartered in San Francisco. Users save images, called pins, to themed collections called boards.
People use it to plan projects and find ideas for recipes, home decor, fashion, weddings and travel. A recommendation system suggests new pins based on what a user saves and searches for. Pins link back to the websites that published the images, so the service sends traffic to many retailers and bloggers.
The company earns money from advertising, including promoted pins and shopping ads. It went public in 2019. Pinterest has said it wants a positive space and has limited some categories of content. Younger users, especially women, form a large part of the audience. Bill Ready has been chief executive since 2022. Pinterest says its audience is made up of people who plan ahead and look for inspiration. It lists on the New York Stock Exchange and has offices in the United States and many other countries.
