X is a social media service formerly known as Twitter. Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams launched Twitter in 2006. It grew around posts limited to 140 characters, later extended to 280.
Users follow accounts and see a feed of posts, images and video. Reposts, replies and likes spread content. Journalists, politicians and public figures use it to share news as it happens. Hashtags and trending topics help people follow live events.
Elon Musk bought the company in October 2022 and took it private. In July 2023 the service was renamed X. Since then it has changed its verification system, moderation rules and API pricing. Subscription tiers called X Premium sell extra features. In 2025 X became part of Musk's xAI company, which runs the Grok chatbot. The headquarters is in Bastrop, Texas, and San Francisco. The Community Notes feature lets users add context to posts. Linda Yaccarino served as chief executive from 2023 until she resigned in 2025. The platform remains widely used by news organizations, sports teams and brands.
