Chipotle Mexican Grill is an American restaurant chain. Steve Ells opened the first location in Denver, Colorado, in 1993. The company moved its headquarters to Newport Beach, California, and went public in 2006.
The menu is built around burritos, bowls, tacos and salads that diners customize along a serving line. Fillings include chicken, steak, barbacoa, carnitas, rice, beans and salsas. The chain says it favors whole ingredients and limits artificial additives.
Chipotle runs company-owned restaurants rather than franchising in North America. It has stores in the United States, Canada and a few European countries. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Brian Niccol led the chain from 2018 until he left in 2024 for Starbucks, and Scott Boatwright followed. The company opened its first Chipotlane drive-through pickup lanes in 2018. It has expanded to Europe and the Middle East.
