Subway is an American sandwich chain headquartered in Miami, Florida. Fred DeLuca borrowed 1,000 dollars from family friend Peter Buck and opened the first shop in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1965 under the name Pete's Super Submarines.
Customers choose bread, protein, cheese, vegetables and sauces, and staff assemble the sandwich in front of them. The menu also includes salads, wraps, cookies and breakfast items. Footlong and six-inch sizes are the standard.
Almost all restaurants are run by franchisees. Subway has had one of the largest restaurant counts in the world, with locations in over 100 countries. In 2023 the private equity firm Roark Capital bought the company. Since 2015 the chain has reduced the number of locations in the United States after years of fast growth. It also sells through grocery shops and airports. The brand's main competitors include Jimmy John's, Jersey Mike's and Firehouse Subs.
