McDonald's is an American fast food company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their restaurant in San Bernardino, California, in 1940. Ray Kroc started franchising the concept in 1955 and later bought out the brothers.
The menu centers on burgers, fries, chicken sandwiches, breakfast items and soft drinks. Well-known items include the Big Mac, the Quarter Pounder and the McNuggets. Menus differ by country to suit local tastes.
Most restaurants are run by independent franchisees. The company earns income from rent and fees as well as food sales. It operates in more than 100 countries and has long been one of the largest restaurant chains by location count. The company owns much of the land and buildings under its restaurants, which it leases to franchisees. Ronald McDonald House Charities is a related nonprofit. Its shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
